The Abbot of the Mission came to us with a vision for a new chapel, named All Saints in memory of the late Ben Ferguson. Ben faithfully shepherded the congregation for more than ten years, and his kindness and authenticity live on in the people he chose to serve and the family he left behind. Under his care the church flourished, and it needed room to grow.
The grounds sit in Onion Bottom, in the heart of downtown Chattanooga, a refuge for the city's unhoused neighbors with a community kitchen and shelter close by. The dense urban site is crossed by the scars of abandoned rail lines, which left an irregular geometry to work with.
Looking for places that had met similar conditions, we kept returning to the Dutch Expressionists. Their irregular plans mirrored our site, their playfulness seemed to carry Ben's spirit, and their tactile materials belonged to the city. The movement also grew from a social mission, much like the church's own.
With this in mind, we shaped a new chapel for the Mission, with room for more than 500 people. A large courtyard, flanked by a gathering space, an art gallery, and a coffee shop, opens to the street so the life of the church can be seen from the sidewalk. At its corner a new bell tower rises, set to catch the sunrise on the winter solstice, a sign of light and hope in our darkest moments.

Shackleford Ridge Residence
Our client, a contractor himself, had built or renovated many of the homes his family lived in over the years, yet none quite suited the way they lived. They were still chasing a house they could call home, one that held meaning and memory. They remembered coming home from school to find their mother on the stairs, and a big open room by the fire for play and stories. They wanted a home for deep living and connection with the natural world, where the doors stay open and friends are always welcome.

Carrol Residence
The clients were looking for a home for a new season of life. They wanted to spend more time in Chattanooga, where they already had family, and to share more of their life with them. They found an urban lot in the North Shore neighborhood and asked for a home that could support an active life, with room for large family gatherings and intimate nights by the fire. The kitchen was the heart of it, a place for people to gather, eat, and share stories.

Windrose Farm
Our clients came to us with a dream of a hospitality retreat in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. We saw right away that they are relentlessly hospitable, doors always open, table always set, friends always welcome. With a heart for community and place, they hope to share the joy of the land with anyone willing to come, and to build a legacy farm and retreat that feels like a second home.
